Love them or hate them? I asked on Facebook what people thought about green smoothies and what their favorite combinations were. The reactions were mixed. A majority of respondents said they liked them, but there was also some negative reaction towards them. I don’t blame that reaction. I didn’t even like the idea of a green smoothie until recently. Some time ago I tried one combination that I didn’t like at all (to be fair, I didn’t follow a recipe, I just threw a bunch of ingredients in the blender and the result was less than appetizing). But a new “recipe” and a new approach to green smoothies made me change my mind.
I say “recipe” because there’s really not much to it. You may use as many ingredients as you like as long as you follow the ratio that makes it taste good. In my case, I’ve been using celery, spinach, Swiss chard, nopales, strawberries, bananas, pineapple, amaranth, and natural peanut butter.
So what’s this secret “recipe” that made me change my mind? I found a very easy to follow recipe here. The concept is very simple: 2 cups of leafy greens, 2 cups of liquid and 3 cups of ripe fruit. To boost it (I believe that refers to give it more energy) the article recommends adding a nut or grain. I quickly found out that this ratio is perfect to make a tasty smoothie. I’ve tinkered with the recipe to make my perfect smoothie and I think I’ve come out with a pretty good one.
- 1 large nopal
- 2 cups of leafy greens (celery, swiss chard, spinach)
- 3 cups of fruit (pineapple, strawberries, banana)
- 1 cup amaranth
- 2 TBS natural peanut butter
- Blend nopal with ½ cup of water
- Add leafy greens and 1 cup of water, blend until the chunks are gone and pour into a pitcher
- Blend fruit, amaranth and peanut butter with another cup of water. Mix in pitcher and serve.
But what are the benefits of drinking this concoction? You may ask. I try not to obsess over too many details. I work out and try to eat as healthily (as long as it’s delicious food) as I can just for the simple reason that it makes me feel well. But in a future post I’ll highlight the health benefits of drinking a glass of green smoothie a day. What is your favorite green smoothie? Share in the comment section!
