Like I’ve mentioned in past posts, I feel like I’m in foodie heaven here in Mexico, and I have tasted just a very small portion of the food this country has to offer. I’ve been to some of my favorite places to eat in Mexico City, but I still need to visit a lot more and other parts of the country where food is amazing, not to mention all the stuff you can see, do and get. But I will get to it, eventually, and I’ll share here all the amazing food, places and people I encounter in my trips.
Like I mentioned on this post I want to make this blog a guide of delicious food to eat and amazing places to visit in Mexico. I will start with my hometown, Mexico City, a chaotic yet magical city where you can find any kind of cuisine and cuisine fusion that will take your breath away. Some of the places I’ve visited so far are:
Los dinamos. A national park to the southwest of the city, very close to where my parents live. Here you can find small shacks that sell tacos, quesadillas, stews, sopes, cafe de olla, pulque (an alcoholic beverage made out of the maguey plant that when is flavored with other ingredients such as coffee, pineapple, strawberry or mango it’s called curado) and fresh trout that you pick from a tank.
Coyoacán. The cultural heart of the city since the times of Frida Khalo (and even before the arrival of the Spaniards) and my favorite barrio of the city. Here you can find the best fried quesadillas ever and the best coffee in town at El Jarocho. Walk around the colonial streets, stop at the main square or any of the plazas and gardens to watch street performers or just people walk by. Have some delicious ice cream from any of the ice cream parlors around the neighborhood, also the best in the city. Sit down at any of the cafes to have a conversation or just enjoy a beautiful day. There are so many things to do, see and eat in Coyoacan that I will dedicate several posts to it in the future.
And of course, I can’t leave out the delicious food I’ve been having at home. My favorite dish hasn’t been the amazing lasagna my mom made the first week I was here. It was the chiles en nogada she prepared not only for one, but three dinner parties she threw in a row (yes I am my mom’s son). My sister came over to help with the preparation and the amazing chiles you see in the first and second to last pictures of this post were the result of two days of hard work. When I made them a couple of years ago in Ohio, they weren’t half as good as my mom’s. But of course she started making them with her mom when she was just a little girl.
This post is only the beginning of a series of posts where I’ll highlight a barrio, a neighborhood or a town of this country that has so much delicious food to offer. I hope you enjoy this virtual culinary tour of Mexico, and maybe in the future, you will be drinking a cup of coffee with me in this city I now call home.
