Mango Atole

Mango atole

It’s already spring, but we are still having some chilly days in our corner of the world. And though I am ready for summer salads, grilling (yes, this year I am going to start grilling) and warmer temperature foods, I can still enjoy some comfort food and hot drinks from colder months. Last time I posted about the mangoes that I’ve been receiving from the Mango Board. What I didn’t post was what I did with the first batch of mangoes they sent me, but here it is finally. Would you care for a steamy cup of mango atole? This drink is perfect for a chilly spring night because it combines the comfort of a hot drink and the flavors of summer.

Mango atole

Mango Atole
Recipe type: Drinks
Cuisine: Mexican
  • •1 lt (4 cups) water
  • •1 can (12 oz or 35o ml) evaporated milk
  • •1 stick of cinnamon
  • •3 TBSP corn starch
  • •1 mango, diced
  • •1/4 cup sugar
  • •Garam Masala (view description below)
  1. Blend mango with 1 cup of water.
  2. Bring water, milk, and mango to a boil in a medium pot over medium heat with the stick of cinnamon.
  3. In ½ cup of water dissolve corn starch until smooth.
  4. Once the water starts to boil add corn starch and sugar.
  5. Simmer for 15 minutes. Stir constantly so it doesn’t stick to the bottom of the pot.
  6. Serve hot, sprinkle some Garam Masala on top and enjoy!

The Garam Masala is a sweet, aromatic mix of spices that I received along with the mangoes and it has spices like cinnamon, coriander and cardamon. It tasted great sprinkled on the atole.

¡Buen provecho!

  • I have never tried this drink, but I want to now. Great post. Thanks!

  • I love Garam Masala… can't tell it's a DRINK from the picture…looks much like a pudding.
Like your photography…..always so vivid, and 3D.

  • Mmmmmm… Garam Masala is a new and exotic thing to me; Mangoes, I know, but never tried them hot. I would love to have one of these cute jars and taste it on a chilly night ;D. Here, the weather is being a bit crazy too… not too warm yet.
    Salud amigo!

  • I'm not usually a fan of drinking my calories. But this. I need to try. I am a verified addict of anything that involves mango. And cinnamon. Put the two together – things could get dangerous.

  • Sounds very welcoming and something I'd like to try some day.

  • Our mangoes are wee little things at this point, but when they grow up I'll have to try this. Never had any sort of atole. It sounds like a good nightcap.

  • This is an interesting drink. Never seen anything like it!

  • Oooh! How comforting and delicious. I do love the garam masala you sprinkled on top!

  • Well we still seem to be going back and forth with the weather here as well. Warm and sunny one day and then all of a sudden chilly and not so warm the next. I love this drink!

  • Oh what a great sounding drink!
