Breakfast salad

I have mentioned before that breakfast is for me the most important, and often the biggest, meal of the day. I usually get up at 5:30 am to go to the gym and by the time I get back I am ready to eat a horse. But sometimes, on my days off from my workout routine, I just want to have a light, healthy, sweet breakfast. That’s when I return to the basics. Back home in Mexico, the days always started with a big bowl of fruit salad, homemade yogurt and café con leche. After that we would have eggs, sopes, quesadillas, gorditas de piloncillo or any other of my mom’s delicious culinary creations. Yes, our breakfast were always BIG.

This is a typical fruit salad for me. I always try to add fruit that is in season and local, although I can’t live wihout the tropical fruit I grew up with. In this shot I am missing papaya (I haven’t gone to the Mexican market in a couple of weeks, and the papayas at Kroger’s are too expensive and too small) and bananas (they weren’t ripe yet). The perfect addition to the plate, I think, was the berries, in terms of taste and composition. Aren’t those strawberries beautiful? I just wish the season lasted longer. There’s nothing better than fresh, local strawberries (only mangoes right off the tree are better), right?

This fruit salad is also going to the Food Photographers Club second assignment. You might think I am going crazy with these salads, but I really want to improve my food styling skills and the way I look at food through the lens of my camera. These assignments are a great way to do it. So join in and give us your opinion, suggestions and ideas about our shots. Hope to see you there!

  1. Okay, you’ve convinced me I need fruit this morning. But there’s a small matter of left over brioche sitting on the counter. Uh–ohhhh….Love that last shot Ben!

  2. If making one want to eat what’s on the plate equals good composition, then I think you scored on this. P.S. Aren’t you supposed to eat something before and not work out on an empty stomach?

  3. What a beautifully arranged plate of fruits! I would definitely have that for my breakfast!

  4. You are so lucky to have access to such beautiful produce. I’m totally jealous (did I sound a Valley Girl there with the totally?). Fruit for breakfast is perfect. But so are waffles for dinner! :p

  13. Dear Ben, did you say 5:30? Are you human? What time you go to bed? Ha, ha… I’d be a zombie all day if I had to wake up at 5:30… Having that wonderful breakfast wouldn’t help!!!! Oh, boy… get 3 fruity breakfast dishes for me and maybe I would survive… ;D

  14. If I had this fruit plate in front of me, I would probably stare at it for like half an hour before I eat it. Too pretty. And the photograph captures the beautiful colors of the fruits so well. I know what you mean about papayas at regular grocery stores being too expensive and small. They usually carry the Hawaiian type which I don’t care for. I only get good mangoes at Mexican (sometimes South Asian) stores. They’re big, meaty, and so sweet.

  15. Your produce is so pretty. I love how bold the colors pop in the photo. Such a great way to start the day. hehe…I just rhymed.

  16. Those strawberries are certainly beautiful Ben. If only there were time right now to enjoy you photography club with 3 jobs and everything else that is in the works. I know you would be an excellent teacher:D
