What makes a good pizza? Is it the crust? the sauce? the toppings? Ever since I started making my own pizzas I have been experimenting with them. Last week it was the time to experiment with the sauce. I’ve said before that I love tomatillos. They make delicious sauces and salsas for Mexican food. So I wondered how a green sauce pizza would taste like. These are the ingredients I used to make the sauce for a large pizza:
- 1 large onion, finely diced
- 3 garlic cloves, chopped
- 3 TBSP olive oil
- 2 to 2 1/2 cups tomatillos, diced
- 1/2 tsp oregano
- 1/2 tsp dry basil
- 1/2 tsp dry parsley
- salt and pepper to taste
Unlike sweet tomato sauce, tomatillo sauce has a tart flavor (that’s what I love about them) so I made a Hawaiian pizza (which I also love) to have the sweet and tart flavors together. I wasn’t sure I was going to like it when I pulled it out of the oven, but I was wrong. I loved it! I will not make all my pizzas with green sauce from now on, but this tomatillo sauce for pizza has won a place in my menu.

But the question remains. What do you think makes a pizza good? With this question I want to announce something that I have been working on for the past couple of months (drum roll please): The What’s Cooking?-Forum.
Yup, you heard me correctly. Now What’s Cooking has its own forum and it’s packed with a lot of cool features. I wanted to start a forum to have a place where foodies and friends can gather to talk about food, health, fitness, cooking, baking and just about anything that we please. Please visit it and register. This is a place for everybody who wants to have a friendly conversation.
One of the topics of the forum is The Question of the Week. The very first question is about pizza. What do you think makes a good pizza. Vote using the poll and let us know your opinion about pizza. How you like them, how often you eat them, what’s your favorite pizzeria, etc. I really hope you enjoy this part of What’s Cooking? After all, this place was created with all of you in mind.
¡Buen provecho!

That sounds incredible! I’ve never had Hawaiian pizza before, but I think it would taste even better with a tomatillo sauce instead of tomato sauce.

Okay… I’m going to have to join the forum. For me, though, a good crust is essential. Probably the most important part.
I’m going to have to play around with tomatillo sauce on pizza – I love it, too!

Ben dude, the pizza looks awesome. You took Hawaiian pizza, an absolute fav, and added a tart green sauce to it. That’s genius! Great idea with the forum too. I’ll def check it out, sounds like a cool place with cool people.
Oh and what makes a good pizza. All three. And you nailed it there bud.

I don’t think any one thing makes the pizza–it’s everything together that makes it so good! I love what you’ve done with this one, Ben!
I’ll go register on your forum right now!

Sorry I’ve been absent (been visiting family)…this is pure genius Ben! A great idea to use tomatillos as the sauce and to pair it with sweet pineapple. A good pizza can be summed up with one word: simplicity. And great to see forums on your site…cool idea. Wiull have to drop by soon.

Are you SERIOUS? Tomatillo salsa on a pizza is just pure genius, Ben! Now I’m imagining shredded chicken, guindillas, cheddar, cilantro and sour cream on top….sort of flat burrito. lol This sounds absolutely incredible, my friend! Oh, and what makes a pizza? It’s gotta be a combo of everything…the crust can be thin or deep dish, the sauce can vary as well as the toppings…it’s unique combos of ingredients that really make pizza great, imo.

I think its the crust first for a good pizza & then a good sauce. This sauce sounds so wonderful & I know Matt would like it so its going in my bookmarks for the next pizza night

What a pity Ben. I don’t even know what tomatillos are because they don’t exist in my part of the world but I am sure that they are great. I would prefer a good crust first of all and then of course the ingredients depend of what we like best. Vegetarian is my first choice of pizza. Contrats on the new look of your site, it is awesome and I shall join your forum soon.

Tomattilos are so good! Using them in a pizza sauce sounds great! I like the use of the pineapple on that pizza.

You are quite the busy, busy person, Ben. I haven’t figured out how I’m going to keep up with all the amazing things people like you have going on in the Bloggosphere, but I’m going to try!
Love the idea of tomatillo sauce on a pizza (of course!) but I’ve always had hesitation with Hawaiian pizzas in general. I do think that the tomatillo sauce is a much better idea than what I normally see, and I, too enjoy salty and sweet. You’re so creative!
For a good pizza, it’s absolutely crust — I cast my vote in the forum already.

This looks absolutely delicious. Tomatillos are a great idea!
