Soups and Salads — By Ben on 15 April 2008

My good friend Tempered Woman of Tempered Woman is hosting this month’s Homegrown Gourmet food event. She chose sweet heavenly soulful comforting potatoes for this month’s theme. Why? Because in her part of the world (like in mine) we are stuck between winter and spring and nothing is really in season. I decided to follow an adventurous recipe I saw online with some personal changes and this is what came out:

The first person who guesses what gave this salad its settled bitter taste will win a small Tupperware prize (we’ve had two winners in the past) There were actually two ingredients that gave it that particular taste, I believe, but I am looking for the non-vegetable one.

To avoid any misunderstandings only one answer per person will be taken into consideration If you answered more than once, only the first guess will be considered, even if any of your other answers is correct.

I will post the recipe (along with the right answer) tonight or tomorrow morning.

Good luck!

For some reason this was a difficult one, and I thought it was going to be easy. The secret ingredient was BEER! So Peter was right again. I knew that a guy would get it right when I said to think about bitterness in a really hot day. Congrats Peter, you won another scrapper. LOL just kidding. I will see what else I can send your way :D

I based this beer potato salad on this recipe, but I made some minor changes. I didn’t use 3 lbs of potatoes (we are only 2 in our house) and I was out of mayo so I skipped it. I added some radishes, which gave the salad an interesting kick and instead of hot sauce I added some chili powder and the juice of one lemon.

How did it taste? You really have to let it rest for at least a couple of hours to let the flavors settle. I tried it right after I made it and it was really bitter, but the next day it was just amazing. This is one salad I will be making again this summer.

Buen provecho!
